Car Park Closures

Two major car parking buildings in the central city have been closed by their owners while the buildings are inspected for possible structural damage from recent earthquakes. They are the James Smith’s car park and the car park on the corner of Tory and Wakefield streets.

Motorists who use these buildings should make alternative parking arrangements, or consider using public transport.

Finding available car parks

There are electronic signs around the city indicating how many free car parks are available in car park buildings around the city. That information, along with a map showing their locations, is also available by viewing:

Council-owned car parks

Council parking buildings and car parks are clearly marked with blue signs. Prices and payment methods vary, so check the signs when you park.

Central city parks

Civic Square (entrance off Harris Street)

  • Open 6am−12 midnight
  • Daytime (6am−6pm): $4 per hour, maximum stay of 2 hours
  • Evening (6pm−12 midnight): $2 per hour, maximum stay of 6 hours
  • Weekend: free, but a maximum stay of 2 hours applies on Saturdays and Sundays, 6am - 6pm

Clifton car park (entrance off The Terrace)

Monday−Friday

Earlybird fee rate: 6am - 8.59am start time and park for 4 hours or longer: $15 per day

Hourly fee rates:

  • 6am−12 midnight: $4 per hour
  • 12 midnight−6am: $2 per hour

Saturday - Sunday, public holidays: $2 per hour (maximum daily charge: $6)

Overnight parking

If you leave your car parked overnight, the overall charge is made up of any of the above fee categories that apply during the total time the car was parked. For example:

Start time on first day: 8.00am
Departure time on second day: 5.00pm
Charges: $15 (earlybird concession) + $12 (night hourly fee for 6 hours) + $15 (earlybird concession) = $42
Start time on first day: 5.00pm
Departure time on second day: 9.00am
Charges: $28 (day hourly fee rate for 7 hours) + $12 (night hourly fee for 6 hours) + $12 (day hourly fee rate for 3 hours) = $52

Payments can be made by cash only at the Paystation or by cash and EFTPOS at the manned booths.

Reserved parks

Reserved parking is available at two main areas:

  • Clifton South (area entered from Kumutoto Lane, off Boulcott Street): $225 per month (includes GST)
  • Clifton Terrace (areas on Rosina Fell Lane): $300 per month (includes GST)

Michael Fowler Centre Car Park (entrance off Wakefield Street)

  • Daytime (6am−6pm): $4 per hour, maximum stay of 2 hours
  • Evening (6pm−12 midnight): $2 per hour, maximum stay of 6 hours
  • Weekends: free, but a maximum stay of 2 hours applies on Saturdays and Sundays, 6am - 6pm

Parking on the waterfront

The car parks at Barnett Street, Kumutoto and Clyde Quay Wharf are all owned and managed by Wellington City Council's business unit City Shaper.

Barnett Street Car Park (pay and display)

150 bays located on the corner of Cable and Barnett streets.

  • Casual parking: $4 per hour
  • Daily parking: $12 for 12 hours, $24 for 24 hours

Kumutoto Car Park (pay and display)

Located next to the waterfront entrance, opposite Whitmore Street and the New Zealand Post building, Waterloo Quay. This car park offers a day rate, hourly, evening and weekend rates.

  • Casual parking: $4 per hour
  • Daily parking: $15 for 12 hours, $25 for 24 hours

Clyde Quay Car Park

Located at the southern end of the Overseas Passenger Terminal, Herd Street.

  • Casual parking: $4 per hour - 2 hours maximum

From 1 July 2014:
Casual parking: $4 per hour. There will be no daily parking rates.

Queens Wharf Bus Park − western side of TSB Bank Arena

  • $10 per hour, $30 for 12 hours, $40 for 24 hours

Bus parking: Free parking may be available for buses taking groups to the Museum of Wellington City & Sea. Enquiries must be made with the museum, email museumswellington@wmt.org.nz
