The road closures will be on parts of Oriental Parade and Evans Bay Parade, between Carlton Gore Road and Maida Vale Road, from 7pm until 6am, on Tuesday 26, Wednesday 27 and possibly Thursday 28 November.
Vehicles will be diverted onto Carlton Gore Road and Maida Vale Road. However, if people don’t have to drive this way they should consider taking another route such as the Mt Victoria Tunnel.
The bottom of Carlton Gore Road will also be closed to traffic at times for a few minutes while heavy trucks and the crane are moved in and out of the work zone. Trucks carrying the concrete panels will be turning at the bottom of Carlton Gore Road and reversing back towards Pt Jerningham to where the crane will lift the panels into place.
Evans Bay Parade residents will still be able to get in and out of their properties by car from the Maida Vale Road end.
People walking or biking can still use the bays route but will have to stop and wait a few minutes to be escorted through the work zone on the hill side of the road as the footpath and cycle lane on the seaward side will be closed. Cyclists will have to dismount and walk their bikes through the work site.
The number 24 bus will be diverted through Hataitai via Carlton Gore and Grafton roads to Wellington Road, and the bus stop on Oriental Bay opposite Carlton Gore Road will be closed – check Metlink for updates.
Wellington City Council Principal Engineer Veronica Byrne says the contractors expect to complete the work over two nights but have allowed for three as a contingency.
“We’re doing this work at night to minimise disruption, however the size of the crane and the trucks transporting the concrete panels means we have to close both traffic lanes.
“The crane will be brought in from Petone on Tuesday, and the precast panels will be moved by truck and trailer units during the night from Evans Bay Marina where they are being stored.”
If the work can’t be done this week because of strong winds, the contractors will be aiming to get it done next week on Tuesday and Wednesday (3 and 4 December), weather permitting.
