About the project
Plans to upgrade Grenada North Park have been in the making since 2011, and the concept design is now complete.
In 2024, engagement and planning about Grenada North Park’s future took place. Findings were used to update the concept plan for the long-term vision of the park.
We're now working through the next steps, including how to deliver the upgrades and what approach to take. Our focus is on establishing essential infrastructure while progressing towards the long-term vision as funding and planning allow.
As part of this, we're doing an assessment of the buildings to better understand what built facilities are needed in the immediate and long-term future.
Building needs assessment
Some of the park’s existing facilities may no longer meet the needs of the community. This assessment will:
- understand the built needs of the current and future park users and the wider community.
- gauge whether the existing facilties meet those needs
- explore what additional facilities might be needed to achieve the park’s long-term vision.
Concept plan
Wellington engineering firm WSP has completed technical site investigations at Grenada North Park, including hydrological and geotechnical analysis to inform the options for future development.
They also worked with the community to review the original plans and decide what could be included in the park’s new concept plans. This includes:
- new artificial sport field
- refurbishment of other fields
- entrance upgrades including car parking
- playground upgrade
- walking and biking tracks
- furniture and other amenities

Background
In 2011, a masterplan for Grenada North Park was produced. It highlighted that artificial turf could increase sports field usage at the park, as it can extend playing time to 50 hours per week or more, regardless of weather.
