Advisory groups

Wellington City Council's advisory groups provide advice to Councillors and officers based on their lived experiences.

About the advisory groups

With the introduction of the Ethnic Communities Advisory Group this year, Wellington City Council now has five advisory groups. You can find out more about each advisory group below.

Dates for upcoming Advisory Group meetings will be confirmed early 2026.

Disabled Communities Advisory Group

The Disabled Communities Advisory Group has 8 members, with two seats reserved for Māori members. The group meets 5–7 times per year. 

The Disabled Communities Advisory Group provides the Council with feedback and advice by:

  • advising on Strategic approaches to reducing barriers for disabled people across Wellington 
  • embedding accessibility into Council’s long-term strategies, plans, and key projects 
  • sharing lived experience and community-informed perspectives to shape inclusive outcomes.

Ethnic Communities Advisory Group

The Ethnic Communities Advisory Group consists of 8 members. The group meets 5–7 times per year. The Ethnic Communities Advisory group advises on:

  • strategic issues affecting ethnic communities in Wellington 
  • Council policies, plans, and initiatives through culturally informed perspectives 
  • effective engagement approaches that build trust and connection with ethnic communities.

The Ethnic Communities Advisory Group will not be seen as representing all ethnic people in the city.


Pacific Communities Advisory Group

The Pacific Communities Advisory Group has 8 members and meets 5–7 times per year.

The Pacific Communities Advisory Group is designed to have representatives from Wellington's main Pacific nation groups - Cook Islands, Fiji, Melanesia, Micronesia, Niue, Samoa, Tokelau, Tuvalu, and Tonga.

The group is a link between the Council and Wellington's Pacific communities by:

  • advising Council on strategic approaches on growing a city where Pasifika peoples thrive and contribute to Council’s priorities
  • embedding Pacific perspectives into Council strategies, plans, and key initiatives.

Takatāpui Rainbow Advisory Council

The Takatāpui Rainbow Communities Advisory Group has 8 members; two seats are reserved for takatāpui members. The group meets 5–7 times per year.

They advise Wellington City Council on

  • strategic approaches to growing a city where diverse rainbow communities thrive and contribute to Council priorities
  • embedding rainbow inclusion into Council’s strategies, plans, and key initiatives.

Rangatahi Youth Communities Advisory Group

Rangatahi Youth Communities Advisory Group has up to 12 members, and works on youth-related projects, as well as advising Wellington City Council on issues that affect the city and the city's youth.

The Rangatahi Youth Communities Advisory Group meets regularly to provide a voice for young people by:

  • assisting and advising the City Council on how to help grow a great city where young people thrive and contribute to the City Council's priorities
  • bringing extra insight to Council (a youth perspective) to solve problems facing a changing world
  • developing the capabilities of its members (including leadership and engaging more, wider youth).

If you wish to attend an advisory group, please email us at advisory.groups@wcc.govt.nz at least one week in advance for more information.

Recruitment for Advisory groups

Recruitment for Advisory Groups takes place every three years, aligned with the Council triennium. We'll recruit more if positions open, as members may choose to leave a group.

We'll be recruiting for the new groups in October 2025. If you're passionate about improving Wellington's quality of life and have knowledge or experience in one of these groups, we encourage you to apply when applications open.
