Internship and career programmes

We offer internships for graduating students or those going into their final year. And we partner with organisations to help remove barriers to employment.

Internship programme

As part of our goal to be an employer of choice, we offer a summer internship programme for students who are either graduating or heading into their final year of study.

Our internship programme provides an in-depth view of how local government works. You can attend lunch and learn sessions with leaders and teams from across the organisation and gain insights into why working for the Council is the place to be. From city design to transport and infrastructure, climate action to IT and technology, we have internships that cover a wide range of opportunities.

The mahi you do will relate to the degree you are studying. It's a wonderful opportunity to grow your work experience and establish networks while helping the Council to deliver on our work programmes. Many of our interns have secured a variety of employment contracts with us.

Career programmes

At the Council, we build diverse teams by looking for and attracting people with a variety of perspectives and skills, who represent the city and communities we serve.

Our career programmes support people who have faced barriers to employment by creating work opportunities within the Council. We run these programmes in partnership with the following organisations:

Community Connections

Community Connections help remove barriers to employment for disabled people and people with long-term mental or physical health barriers. Through their Employment Connections service, they work with jobseekers, school leavers, their whānau, and employers. 

We are working with Community Connections to set up a support programme for people they refer to us for employment. This includes a commitment to providing education to our kaimahi (staff) about the needs of people who are neurodiverse, disabled and/or have access requirements. This ensures everyone has a safe and inclusive workplace.

Talent RISE

Talent RISE is passionate about changing the lives of young people who have experienced barriers to employment. They do this by providing education, training, life skills and opportunities to gain independence and purpose through employment.

We currently support Māori and Pacific Island rangatahi between the ages of 18-24 to visit the Council. They get insights into how we work and who we are as an employer. We aim to offer employment opportunities to rangatahi who successfully complete Talent RISE's programme.

Workbridge

Workbridge provides a range of employment support services for people with disability or health conditions. They help connect job seekers with employers and have a nationwide team of experienced consultants.

We regularly meet with Workbridge to discuss employment opportunities within the Council. We are focused on providing opportunities for the people they represent.

We celebrate our diversity and have always received support for my neurodiverse team members, I see that the Council has really grown in this area.
