Liquid waste collection and transportation

Liquid waste from grease traps, septic tanks and trade waste needs to be carefully collected and handled to prevent environmental and public health impacts.

Wellington City Council regulates the collection and transportation of liquid waste to prevent illegal dumping at unauthorised sites.

Getting your waste collected

You can contact these licensed companies to enquirer about collection and transportation of liquid waste in Wellington. Note that some of these companies only deal with specific types of waste.

If your business is producing liquid waste in larger than domestic quantities, you may need a trade waste consent.

Applying for a licence to transport or collect liquid waste

The Council issues licences for companies collecting and transporting liquid waste from:

  • Grease traps
  • Septic tanks
  • Trade waste premises that would require a consent under the Wellington City Trade Waste Bylaw 2016 if the trade waste was discharged into the Council's wastewater system
  • Pre-treatment works.

Licences are issued under the Solid Waste Management and Minimisation Bylaw 2020.

To get a licence, you:

  • must complete and return the application form and pay the required fee
  • will be audited to check that the waste you pick up is disposed of correctly
  • should comply with the WasteMINZ Liquid and Hazardous Wastes Code of Practice.

For more information about the Liquid and Hazardous Wastes Code of Practice, visit the New Zealand Trade and Industrial Waters Forum website.

To apply for a licence, complete and return the application form. We will then send you an invoice for the application fee.

Once the fee has been paid, we will arrange a time to check your control systems including waste types, mixing, volume and disposal to approved sites.

Licence holders are required to keep certain records and provide these to us if requested. Further information about this requirement is available on the application form.

Licences must be renewed annually.
