Northern Walkway

A 14.9 kilometre walk, taking at least 4 hours to complete.

Picture taken from the Northern walkway, showing views of the city and the harbour.

The walkway starts in Johnsonville and follows the outer Green Belt via Mount Kaukau to the Town Belt in Te Ahumairangi Hill (Tinakori Hill) and the Botanic Garden in Kelburn.

The walkway is 14.9km long and takes at least 4 hours to complete, but can be done in stages. It's steep in some places, but not difficult overall.

The starting point of the walkway is at the end of Truscott Avenue in Johnsonville or the top of the Cable Car in Upland Road, Kelburn.

Highlights of the walkway include spectacular 360° views of the city, harbour, mountain ranges and the sea, abandoned tunnels, and the city’s oldest reserve.

To get to the northern end of the walkway, take the Johnsonville line train from Wellington to Raroa Station and walk 1.6km to Truscott Avenue (see the map in the brochure or app). Car parking is available at the end of Truscott Avenue.

To get to the southern end of the walkway, take the Cable Car from Lambton Quay to Upland Road. There is limited car parking in Upland Road

You can also walk shorter sections of the walkway:

  • Head to Weld Street for the northern end of Te Ahumairangi Hill section of the walk and the southern end of the Trelissick Park section
  • You can also begin at Simla Crescent station and join the walk there.

For public transport options, see the Metlink website.
