Waihinahina Park

Location: Newlands

Entrance: Ladbrooke Drive.

Brief description: Waihinahina Park is an open grassed area overlooking the Horokiwi Quarry and bordered on three sides by hills covered with regenerating bush. The park has a remnant of original forest with nikau and kiekie.

A stream flows around the southern and western sides, and there are some small ponds.

The traditional Māori name for Horokiwi is Waihinahina, which means ‘the stream of the white wood’.

Despite some extensive quarrying, it is still possible to see the stream (as a waterfall) from various vantage points near Hutt Road.

There are picnic tables and rubbish bins near the parking area.

Parking: Car park beside the picnic area.

Accessibility:  Flat grassed area.

Dogs:  This is an off-leash dog exercise area.

History:  The park is the site of the old Horokiwi landfill and is dedicated to Dennis Duggan, a prominent member of the Newlands community who died in 1996.
