Exemptions from having to carry out seismic work

Where a building poses a low risk you may be eligible for an exemption from having to carry out seismic work.

How it works

Certain types of earthquake-prone buildings are eligible for an exemption from having to carry out seismic work. If you are approved for an exemption it recognises that, although your building may be earthquake-prone, the consequences of its failure would be low.

There are very strict criteria for exemptions. Buildings that are eligible are generally remote from other buildings, have low levels of occupancy in and around the building, and are less likely than other earthquake-prone buildings to cause damage or injury.

Priority buildings are not eligible for exemptions.
