Night works

To ensure our roads are in the best possible condition, our roading services teams operate 24 hours a day 7 days a week for routine and planned non-routine works.

Routine night works

Routine after hours road works includes line marking of the roads, maintaining streetlights and street cleaning in the city centre.

Lower traffic volumes at night ensures we can work on our roads safely with minimal traffic flow disruption:

  • Line marking at night means there is less likelihood of wet paint being driven over by traffic
  • Faulty street lighting is easily seen at night, which helps us fix the right things, and with less traffic there is better access for large vehicles
  • The cleaning of our city centre is a complex process and working at night means we can use our machines on the footpath with minimal risk to pedestrians. We also collect rubbish and recycling during this time.

All these activities will unfortunately generate some disruption, and we ask our contractors to minimise noise as much as possible. We are always aware of completing work in the shortest possible time and we ask for your patience.

Planned non-routine night works

Occasionally, we carry out planned non-routine works after normal working hours. We will advise residents and businesses when these works are planned through letter drops, radio advertising, and using the Council’s Facebook and Twitter pages.

During the planning process we consider all alternative options. We assess the works requirements and whether less traffic on the road helps us best manage workers safety. Other considerations include the impact the planned works will have on the public during the day and the disruption it will mean for the city.

Where we consider that night work is appropriate, we try to minimise the effects of noise on residents by carrying out the noisiest works before 11pm. Some of the less noisy works will continue after this time.

Emergency works

Sometimes we will need to carry out emergency works. These works are unplanned and may cause disruption. Unfortunately, there is little we can do about this, but we will minimise disruption and noise as much as we can.
