Moped and motorcycle safety events

Between 2014 and 2023, motorcycles made up 11.8% of injuries from road crashes in Wellington city, but more than 26% of fatal injuries. We're helping moped and motorcycle riders gain practical skills to improve their safety on the road.

Moped Safety for High School Students

In 2024, we held two moped and motorcycle safety workshops at high schools. These courses were organised in collaboration with ACC, New Zealand Police, Kaitiaki o Ara/Students Against Dangerous Driving (SADD) and the Motorcycle Collective.

These workshops gave young riders of Pōneke a comprehensive understanding of the importance of wearing personal protective gear, and crucial road rules governing moped and motorcycle usage. The Motorcycle Collective also provided hands-on experience to conduct essential maintenance checks to ensure that vehicles were safe for the road.

More than 80% of students surveyed said they were likely or very likely to recommend this workshop to other students.

Most importantly, in response to the question “Did this event influence your attitude towards road safety while riding your vehicle? If so, how?”, student answers included:

“Seeing the results in casualties makes me think twice about my actions”

“Yes, to slow down and be careful around other vehicles”

“Yes, by showing me how and why I should always check my tires”

Workshops are being scheduled for 2025 – see our contact details below if you’re interested in getting your school involved.

Motorbike safety with Dave Moss

On Thursday 13 February 2025 we hosted world-renowned motorcycle safety expert Dave Moss in Wellington. He provided a free presentation and hands-on workshop where motorcyclists were taught how to adjust their bike to their individual physical requirements for maximum safety when riding.

Future events

Further courses and training are available through the Ride Forever initiative by ACC.
