Drink driving

Wellington City Council promotes a zero tolerance message when it comes to drink driving.

We have teamed up with NZ Police to remind people to Drive Safe, Drive Sober. The campaign promotes a positive message about being safe behind the wheel and not taking the risk.

Each year, more than 400 people continue to be seriously injured or killed on New Zealand roads because of drink driving. In 2018, there were 28 serious/fatal crashes and 136 non injury/minor crashes in Wellington City, with alcohol being the mitigating factor in all incidents.

Wellington Road Policing Manager Inspector Derek Orchard says of the 377 people who died on our roads in 2018, approximately 20% were impaired by alcohol. “If you are going to drive, avoid alcohol. It’s not worth your life or someone else’s”

We recommend either organising a sober driver or planning alternative transport (taxi/bus) to avoid having a few drinks and risk being over the legal alcohol limit.
