Friday Five: Ways to celebrate NZ Music Month

It’s NZ Music Month, a time to celebrate music in Aotearoa and the talented people who make it. Our creative capital is filled with fantastic opportunities to get amongst the music scene. Here are some ideas to get you started.

1. Check out the live music scene at one of Pōneke's great venues

Live local music is something hat Wellington excels at. Check out WellingtonNZ’s pick of independent venues and be inspired to get your boogie on this weekend.

2. Support New Zealand artists by buying their records

The last few years have been tough on us all, particularly performers who get their incomes from packing out venues.  A great way to support musicians is by paying for their music and buying a record! Enjoy the visuals of the album art and feel the groves of the vinyl when you unwrap your newest possession. Find a great record shop to visit from this handy list from WellingtonNZ

3. Do you have a band? Let us help host your next gig!

Whether your group is big or small, we have venue options for you. If your small band is looking for a cool suburban spot, consider one of our community centres. Or if your band is needing a larger space, you can apply for a subsidy for these larger venues on our website. Need some audio gear? Wellington City Libraries has a great selection of equipment that you can borrow at reasonable prices. Visit the Wellington City Libraries website to check out what they have to offer.

4. Find a new Wellington musician to listen to with ‘The Eighth Note Series’

From Crash Bandihoot to Ingrid and the Ministers, this Wellington City Libraries series covers some of Pōneke's most coveted musicians. Check it out to discover a new artist or catch up with some great Wellington musicians.

5. Check out musicians of Pōneke’s past

The Wellington City Library holds a great collection of music and information about who made it in the Wellington Artist Directory.  This directory has something for everyone, covering musos all the way back to the 1940s!

Watch out each Friday for a fun list of five great activities to do, places to explore, or things to discover in our awesome city.
