Friday Five: Our libraries have your weekend sorted

If you are crafty, a book lover, a movie enthusiast, music lover, art lover or a combination of all five, there is something for everyone at our libraries this weekend!

1. See the new photography exhibition 'Authors' opening Saturday at Waitohi Community Hub

More than 70 images of local and overseas novelists, poets, non-fiction writers, including Margaret Atwood (pictured above), will be on display from this Saturday.

This exhibit is the work of Photographer Alan Knowles who was a regular attendee at events hosted by the New Zealand Book Council, now ReadNZ Te Pou Muramura, in the 1990s. Alan offered to make a series of pro bono portraits for the Council’s archives and to pay homage to the administrators and booksellers responsible for touring and promoting the authors’ work.

This exhibition is presented thanks to the Photography Aotearoa Charitable Trust.

2. Shsshhhhhh, it’s the silent book club

Join our silent book club in the city at Arapaki Library, Manners Street, every Friday evening from 5pm to 6.45pm.

Bring your current book or browse our shelves for something new to read alongside other book-lovers with the opportunity to discuss afterwards. People of all ages welcome.

3. Get INTO THE GROOVE and take a trip back to the ‘80s

Our dedicated Archivist, Gabor Toth, has scanned the full collection of the popular 'Wellington City Magazine' so you can see how we lived and worked in the 1980s. View the magazines online at Wellington City Recollect.

4. Everything is awesome at LEGO® Time

Young, old and everyone in-between can get creative at Te Awe Library’s LEGO® Time using the library’s extensive LEGO® collections. Join us this Sunday, 13 June, from 11am to 12pm for all the fun.

5. Get the whanau together for a free movie and to get creative in The Hive

Each fortnight our librarians hand-pick a classic movie for the Johnsonville community to watch together on a Sunday afternoon. The next screening is this Sunday, 13 June, 1pm-3.30pm.

Before or after the film get creative in The Hive Makerspace! The Hive offers a range of services, including laser cutting, 3D printing, a full recording studio, a sewing station, and arts and crafts material. Let your creativity flow and visit!
