Making positive change in our city

We all love Wellington, and it's a great place to live, work and play. But that doesn't mean there aren't opportunities to make positive change in our city, our suburbs, and our environment. If you want to help make Wellington even better, where can you start?

You could report a fallen tree, or volunteer to remove graffiti. But what else can you do? Here are some ideas to get you started.

Caring for our places

Seen a broken streetlight or broken glass on the ground? Our FIXiT app is a simple way for you to tell us when something’s not right. You can use the app to let us know about dumped rubbish, when your rubbish doesn’t get collected, or if there’s an issue with a traffic light.

FIXiT is super easy to use – just download the app, log the job, and someone will be sent out to get it sorted as soon as possible. There’s also the old-school way of getting in touch. Give our Contact Centre a call on 04 499 4444 with any queries you have – the team will be happy to help.

There are many things you can do to help protect and restore our city’s native wildlife. How about joining our predator free community? It’s as simple as setting up and maintaining traps in your own backyard. Visit Predeator Free Wellington website to find out how else you can get involved.

We all know it can be a little windy in Pōneke. And that means that recycling and rubbish can end up all over the place after you've put it out for pick-up.

You can also help keep your local beaches and parks clean by organising a clean-up in your community.

Supporting change in our city

There are many ways to advocate for change in our city.

We often ask for public feedback on our ideas and proposals. When you make a submission on consultations and engagements, you are helping to shape decisions made about the future of our city. Find out what consultations are underway, and have your say.

Creating your own ePetition is a way to allow people to petition the Council on matters relevant to the Council’s business. This method is more convenient than paper-based petitions, and can reach wider audiences, thanks to the internet. See here to learn more about the process.

Attending Council meetings in person, or watching them online via our YouTube livestream, is a great way to stay up to date with what’s going on. Check out the Council meeting calendar. You can also address councillors directly by applying to speak during public participation.

If there are changes you want to see in the community, one way to start is to petition your local ward councillor. You can find the full list of councillors and their contact details here.

Creating community connections

Building good neighbourhood relationships, through gestures of care and kindness, helps our city to thrive. Our community centres are here for you to connect with your neighbours, make new friends, and offer support to those who may need it. Ideas and resources are on our website.

If you have some spare time and want to make a positive difference in your community, why not volunteer? From graffiti removal to caring for animals at Wellington Zoo, there are many ways you can offer your skills to our city.

If you are concerned about someone who is begging or sleeping rough, please give our Contact Centre a call and we will pass this information on to someone who can help. We work closely with central government and social services to try and end homelessness in our city. Find out more here.

Thanks for caring about our city. Every small, positive change makes a difference and together we can help make Pōneke even better.
