You can’t beat Wellington on Waitangi Day

Celebrate our national day, Te Rā o Waitangi, on Wednesday 6 February along Wellington’s Ara Moana waterfront with kai, kapa haka and live music – including legendary local group The Black Seeds.

The popular Waitangi Day celebration marks the anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi with entertainment and activities for all the city to enjoy.

Mayor Justin Lester says Te Rā o Waitangi, along with Te Matatini and Matariki, show just how the capital embraces its Māori culture.

“The 1840 Treaty of Waitangi is New Zealand’s founding document, between Māori and Pakeha, and on Waitangi Day we gather together to celebrate with family, friends and neighbours of all cultures.

“So grab your friends and whānau and come along to Te Rā o Waitangi for a great line-up of award-winning Māori performers, family-friendly fun and activities, a hāngi and a choice of food trucks, plus a kapa haka group.”

Events portfolio leader Councillor Simon Marsh says the site for the free event is fitting given the occasion and our rich history.

“The Waitangi Park area was originally a large wetland used by Māori as a source of food, water, and for launching waka. The name now acknowledges the site as a significant Wellington landmark for both Māori and Pakeha, and as a space for recreation, leisure and events for locals and visitors alike.”

Council City Events Coordinator Suzanne Tamaki says this year’s event, MC’d by our very own Toni Huata, has a fantastic line-up with something for everyone.

“We’re so excited to see local band The Black Seeds, celebrating 20 years together, and bringing their cool reggae roots soul dub sounds and vibes to the party.

“The hilarious comedic group The Māori Side Steps will also be entertaining the crowds, as well as Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Ngā Mokopuna, award winning reggae artist Majic Pāora, vocalist Jackson Owens, and diva trio, Chocolate Box.”

Don’t forget to bring a refillable water bottle to help us reduce waste by using our hydration station at the event, and check our Facebook page for updates.
