Wellington weather update 15/7/2017: 8am

Things have calmed down out there, but there are still slips, fallen trees, and road closures in the region so keep an eye on our updates page for the latest information.

Wellington City Council teams are going to be busy all weekend clearing up storm-related damage including trees and branches down on roads and tracks, and numerous slips all over the city. The main incidents are reported and kept up to date here:

  • Marine Drive in Seatoun will be closed to through traffic from 9am to 3pm on Saturday so a 100-tonne crane can be used to remove a large pine tree that partially collapsed on to a house on Thursday. Other trees may also be removed
  • Mount Victoria - City to Hataitai walkway from Pirie Street playground to Charles Plimmer Park closed, but alternate route available
  • Prince of Wales - City to sea walkway from Scottish Harriers Club to Hutchison Road closed, but alternate route available
  • There are some delays to public transport, check the Metlink website for latest updates
  • Slip on Mairangi Road in Wadestown, section between Margaret St and Lytton St closed. Access is available from both ends. This slip is expected to take at least two days to clear
  • Motorists and cyclists are advised to take care on Lyall Bay Parade until further notice due to the large amount of sand that has been blown onto the roadway, making it extremely slippery. The sand will be removed as soon as possible
  • Rubbish and recycling services are operating as per usual collection day
  • Check the live flight information for travel details at Wellington Airport
  • Visit NZTA for traffic and highway conditions
  • Ferry sailings have been affected by the weather, check the Interislander and Bluebridge Cook Strait Ferry websites for updates
  • Visit Wellington Electricity for all known outages in the region
  • Motorists are urged to take care due to the possibility of more slips and trees coming down on roads.
