Everybody's pathway to enjoy

A person on a bicycle slowing for a child in a penguin suit is one of the humorous scenarios in Wellington City Council’s courtesy campaign for the waterfront shared pathway this summer.

Signs on the footpaths and on the back of crocodile bikes will remind people that safe and courteous behaviour is all part of ‘the Wellington Way’.

The Council's Portfolio Leader for Public Transport, Cycling and Walking, Councillor Sarah Free, says the quirky messages suit the environment where people come to enjoy themselves - whether they’re travelling to and from work, out exercising or just relaxing in their leisure time.

“Over summer our shared pathways can be quite crowded with people making the most of our wonderful waterfront.

“This is a seasonal reminder that safe and friendly behaviour goes a long way towards everyone enjoying our shared spaces. The waterfront is an increasingly busy place and we all need to look out for each other.”

The campaign also reminds people on bicycles to reduce their speed to suit this environment.

“When you’re riding a bike, a friendly ring on your bell is a great way to tell people you are near. If you are out walking on a shared pathway, it’s always good to be aware of your surroundings and others who are out and about.”

This is the third year the Council has run the ‘Everybody’s pathway to enjoy’ campaign. A series of pop-up activities is also planned for the waterfront in the lead up to the annual Go By Bike Day on 8 February 2017.

The design for the $15,000 campaign was created by the Council’s in-house graphic design team.
