Cheaper weekend bus fares till Christmas

With fares starting as low as $1, Greater Wellington Regional Council and Wellington City Council are again teaming up and offering Wellington shoppers cheaper weekend bus fares in the lead-up to Christmas.

"We want to show our support for our local businesses, many of which are having a tough time following the recent earthquakes. There's never been a better time to get on a bus and get to the shops, avoiding the stress of finding a car park and navigating the traffic" said Greg Campbell, Chief Executive of Greater Wellington Regional Council.

"We know last year Wellingtonians took advantage of the cheaper fares to get their Christmas shopping, and with 3000 fewer car parks available following the earthquakes we want to make it even easier for taking the bus rather than driving their car".

“It’s been a challenging few weeks for our city. Offering cheaper bus fares is one way we can help everyone get moving again, enjoy the Christmas spirit and support local business,” says Wellington Mayor Justin Lester.

“It will be a great way to get in and out of town for next weekend’s two day Very Welly Christmas festival in Lambton Quay (10 and 11 December),“ the Mayor says.

The cheaper fares can be paid by cash or with a Snapper card.

The changes will be in effect from the beginning of service on Saturday 3 December with discounted fares available on all Go Wellington and Newlands Coach services (with the exception of the After Midnight and Johnsonville – Porirua Route 210 services) on the four weekends of 3 and 4 December, 10 and 11, 17 and 18 and 24 December 2016.

No discounts apply on Valley Flyer or Airport Flyer services.

The discounted fares are as follows:

  • Adult fares travelling 1 zone - $1
  • Adult travelling 2 or 3 zones - $2
  • Child fares travelling 1 zone - $1
  • Child travelling 2 or 3 zones - $1.50
