Bus and traffic detours will be in place in Waru Street in Khandallah until mid-October 2016 while the ageing water main beneath the street is upgraded.

From Monday 8 August, a section of the street will be closed to traffic between Whitu and Calcutta streets from 8.30am to 4pm, Monday to Friday, and 7am to 6pm on Saturdays.

The upgrade project, which began in July, is important because the existing pipes are getting to the end of their life and new ones will help make this part of the water network more resilient.

During the times this section of road is closed, buses will be take a slightly longer route via Whitu, Bengal and Calcutta streets and won't use the stops outside 2 and 7 Waru Street.

Access for people living in the section of Waru Street, and pedestrians, will remain open at all times. The road will reopen by 4pm weekdays and 6pm Saturdays unless emergency work is required.

Work is being carried out in Te Kainga Way and Waru Street, including the intersections with Punjab Street, Calcutta Street and Jubilee Road.

The work is being managed by Wellington Water.
