The fund supports projects that encourage people to ride bikes as an everyday transport choice with $50,000 available this financial year.
Projects can be events or activities, training programmes or infrastructure and equipment.
Applications are invited from organisations such as: clubs, community groups, residents’ associations, charities and youth groups. This is the second year the fund has been available.
Initiatives that received support last year include: bicycle valet parking at CubaDupa, themed group rides such as the Tweed Ride and Love to Roll, the annual Go By Bike Day breakfast, Ciclovia on Miramar Peninsula, and the inaugural Bicycle Film Festival at Nga Taonga Sound and Vision. Paul Barker, Planning Manager Network Improvements for Wellington City Council, says Wellington is experiencing phenomenal growth in cycling.
“We are committed to supporting groups that encourage people to ride bikes and contribute to improving rider safety.
“This is one of the ways the Council is supporting cycling as a viable and safe transport choice.
“Smart cities encourage and support people who use active modes of transport such as riding bikes.
“As well as the obvious health benefits, riding bikes is a sustainable transport that helps reduce congestion on our roads.”

Applications for this fund must be received by 5pm Friday 16 September and decisions will be announced in mid-October 2016.
A further $50,000 will also be available next year through this fund.
