Swimming lessons not free for under-5s – clarification

Wellington City Council feels compelled to make it disappointingly clear to a large number of local parents that, unfortunately, it cannot offer free swimming lessons to children under 5 years of age.

Staff at the Council’s swimming pools have been dealing with a heavy increase in phone calls and inquiries over the past 48 hours – since Councillors voted at an Annual Plan meeting on Wednesday 1 June to make general pools admission free for children under 5.

We have to stress that the proposed free entry does not extend to swimming lessons.

The vote to confirm free entry for under-5s is also subject to confirmation at a full Council meeting on 29 June. If it is confirmed, the free entry will be available from 1 July
