Who to contact if you need support, and ways you can help yourself and others stay safe and well during Alert Level 2.

What we all need to do at Alert Level 2 to stay safe

We need your support to protect New Zealand and eliminate COVID-19.

  • At Alert Level 2, there are no restrictions on who can be included in your household bubble.
  • You can go to work, and all businesses and services can open but legally must follow public health rules.
  • Early learning services, schools, kura and tertiary education facilities are open to everyone.
  • Even if you have been vaccinated, you still need to follow the rules to keep everyone safe.

COVID-19 symptoms

If you have symptoms of COVID-19, please call Healthline on 0800 358 5453 or call your local GP for advice. You can find information on symptoms on covid19.govt.nz/covid-19-symptoms

Health emergencies

If you need to visit the Emergency Department, please don’t hesitate. There are processes in place to protect against the spread of COVID-19 through health care facilities, and you needn’t worry that there isn’t capacity. Your health remains important and it’s vital you seek care when you need it, just as you usually would.

Other health issues

If you need to visit your local doctor for another health reason, please contact your local GP for advice.

 

If you need food

We know it can be tough to make ends meet at the best of times. If you need help getting food for you and your whānau, there are support services in Wellington City ready to assist whatever your situation.

Please call the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) on 0800 559 009 to see if you are eligible for an additional food benefit from MSD Grant Funding.

Compassion Soup Kitchen
Compassion Soup Kitchen provides hot meals to Wellington’s most vulnerable. At Alert Level 2, they will serve one takeaway meal every day between 12 noon and 1pm. Takeaway coffee and tea also available. Check the Compassion Soup Kitchen website for an up-to-date schedule.

Emergency accommodation

If you need emergency accommodation, call the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) on 0800 559 009. Please have your MSD number ready if you have one.

Worried about someone else?

If you are worried about a vulnerable person that may need accommodation, please call our Wellington City Council Contact Centre on 04 499 4444 or text 3400 – 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

 

If you need financial support

If you’re struggling to afford food, pay rent or other bills because you no longer have an income coming in, you can apply for the government’s COVID-19 Wage Subsidy.

  • If you work for an employer, then you’ll need to get in touch with them directly.
  • If you’ve been self-employed, then you’ll need to fill out a form at Work and Income.

There you’ll be able to find out what government support you’re eligible for to get you through these next few months.

Rates payment extension

We have extended the due date for rates payments to give you a little more time to deal with the challenges of the recent lockdown

The due date for the rates instalment payment was 1 September 2021. This is now 1 October 2021. For more information see Rates payments options.

Looking after your mental health and wellbeing

It’s normal to feel stressed or lonely during physical distancing. If you need to talk to someone, there is support available:

  • 1737 helpline: free call or text 1737 to talk to a trained counsellor, or visit 1737 website
  • Kidsline: free call 0800 54 37 54 for people up to 18 years old (open 24/7)
  • Youthline: free call 0800 376 633, free text 234, email talk@youthline.co.nz, or find online chat and other support options on Youthline website

Services for over 65s

Age Concern Wellington provides help and support to people aged 65 and over and has police-vetted volunteers throughout the Greater Wellington region.

Accessible information for disabled people

Information is available in a number of accessible formats.

Information for the deaf community can be found at Deaf Aotearoa’s website.

Current exemptions for face coverings remain in place. If you are under the age of 12, have a physical or mental illness or disability, you do not need to wear a mask. For more information about exemptions and how to get an exemption card, visit covid19.govt.nz

Catching public transport

At Alert Level 2 the Government requires all people on public transport to be seated, with standing now prohibited except on school services. Masks are compulsory.

All payment methods including cash will be reinstated and a new NZ Bus timetable will be introduced as it transitions back to full bus, train and ferry services.

Contact tracing at Council sites

Record keeping is now mandatory.

To support the COVID-19 contact tracing efforts consistently we are encouraging people to use the Government's COVID Tracer app to record their movements around Wellington.

If you don’t want to, or aren’t able to use the app, we encourage you to use another method that works for you, like the NZ COVID Tracer booklet. You can download a printable version here.

Other apps can be used, including some that are more accessible to the blind and low vision communities, such as Swarm Check-in app and Google Maps timeline.

Sign up for your vaccination

if you are aged 12 or over, you can book your free COVID-19 vaccination now. It does not matter what your visa or citizenship status is.

You can book on behalf of someone else — or help them with their booking — if you have their permission.
