Electors of Wellington City Council have a right to demand a poll on the electoral system to be used for the election of the Council and its community boards. Should a valid demand for a poll be received, a poll will be held on whether the Single Transferable Vote (STV) or the First Past the Post (FPP) electoral system will be used for the next two triennial Wellington City Council elections (2025 and 2028).
A valid demand must be:
- Made in writing;
- Signed by at least five (5) percent of the number of electors enrolled as eligible to vote at the previous triennial general election of Wellington City Council. This will require 8,022 elector signatures;
- Delivered to the offices of Wellington City Council, 113 The Terrace, Wellington, by 5.00pm on Wednesday 11 December 2023.
Every elector who signs a demand must also set out in it his or her full name and the address for which they are qualified as an elector of Wellington City Council.
Unless a poll determines otherwise, Wellington City Council will continue to use the STV electoral system.
