City Safety CCTV cameras

We operate closed circuit television (CCTV) surveillance cameras in Wellington, which are monitored by trained staff.

Wellington is one of the safest cities on Earth, and Wellington City Council supports that by pro-actively monitoring our urban public spaces through our closed-circuit television network, Camerabase. This CCTV surveillance system is a Council-led initiative and is strongly supported through our partnership with the Wellington Central Police.

What the city safety CCTV cameras are used for

Our use of CCTV cameras aims to make Wellington a safe city through activities that target and prevent crime and public disorder, ensure efficient responses, and increase public safety. The CCTV system also makes it possible for us to gather information on non-police issues such as rough sleeping.

Who monitors the city safety CCTV cameras

Our highly-trained Camerabase staff keep their eyes peeled 24/7 for any incidents or situations arising where people may be at risk, and work with Police, outreach services and other partners to ensure a speedy and appropriate response. This also provides us and outreach agencies with the crucial information we need to help us address social issues such as homelessness, rough sleeping and begging.

What kind of data is collected

All monitoring and use of footage is carried out in accordance with the Privacy Act. Anonymised data is collected to assist with immediate responses and to help with evidence-based planning to improve safety and wellbeing.

How can I request footage or information?

For privacy reasons, we can not release camera footage directly to the public. If you have lodged a complaint or incident with the Police or with your insurance company, they can request footage from Wellington City Council.

You have a right under the Privacy Act 2020 to access any personal information we hold about you, and to ask for it to be corrected if you think it is wrong. For more information, see: Dealing with the Council - Privacy Statement.
