Update: Residency on hold
This residency is on hold at present due to previous COVID-19 restrictions. A successful pilot program was held in 2019. The City Arts Team and partners ArtsACT are working on a renewed and updated residency looking to be offered in 2023-2024, to be confirmed.
How it works
The Canberra Wellington Indigenous Artist Exchange programme supports a Wellington-based artist to go to Canberra for 6 weeks and a Canberra-based Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander artist to visit Wellington for 6 weeks each year.
The programme will strengthen cultural connections between the two cities, as part of our Sister City Agreement initiated in 2016.
Who can apply
Māori artists who reside in the Wellington region can apply. Applicants who do not reside in the Wellington region but who have strong connections to the region – for example iwi affiliations can apply. Artists across all art forms who have established careers will be considered.
How to apply
We are calling for Expressions of Interest for the 2020 residency. Please signal your interest in this opportunity via email to Project Manager, Katie Taylor-Duke: Katie.Taylor-Duke@wcc.govt.nz by Tuesday 4 February 2020.
Include in the email your art form and provide relevant information to support your Expression of Interest, for example web-links to examples of your work – websites, social media pages, galleries, theatres, etc.
Details about the residency
Wellington City Council and artsACT in Canberra will cover all expenses including:
- one return economy airfare between Wellington and Canberra
- per diem to cover living expenses for the duration of the residency
- a small budget for research and/or project materials
- self-contained accommodation and studio space at Gorman House for the Wellington artist and at Bolton Street Sexton’s Cottage for the Canberra artist.
Wellington City Council, the Indigenous Arts Advisory Group, and artsACT in Canberra and their affiliated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Group, will determine the selection of artists.
The selected artist must commit to working full-time on a specific research project in Canberra and fully immerse themselves in Canberra’s indigenous arts sector. On return to Wellington they will be required to share their experiences with Wellington’s art community.
