Happy Valley Road bridge upgrade

We are working on strengthening the bridge on Happy Valley Road, Owhiro Bay

Background

The existing bridge in Owhiro Bay, located near the corner of Happy Valley Road and Robertson Street, was originally constructed in 1909. It was opened as a single lane bridge then widened in 1935 with an additional lane and footpaths on each side.

About the upgrade

Following a full condition assessment of the bridge structure in April 2018, it was recommended to replace the bridge deck and close the footpath until the strengthening work is completed. The project has a budget of $600k including professional fees, which is set to cover:

  • replacement of the steel beams
  • confirmation of repair or replacement of the concrete slab that composes most of the bridge
  • replace the coating on the bridge
  • strengthening of the footpaths.
