Grant Road retaining walls

We have strengthened retaining walls in Grant Road and Frandi Street, Thorndon.

Intersection of Grant Road and Goldies Brae in Wadestown.

Grant Road is an important transport link between the central city, Wadestown and the western suburbs, both in terms of how the city operates day-to-day, and in the event of a major earthquake as a key route out of the city.

As part of Wellington City Council’s ongoing programme of earthquake and natural disaster resilience works on retaining walls, tunnels and bridges, we carried out work on Grant Road and its surrounding streets to ensure better resilience in the event of a natural disaster

In March 2021, we completed a two-year programme of works in Grant Road and nearby Frandi Street.

The works on Grant Road included:

  • Strengthening the existing retaining wall to improve seismic stability.
  • Building a new widened footpath and handrail
  • Relocating and building a new bus stop
  • Strengthening and resurfacing the southbound lane along the length of the retaining wall
  • Painting new road markings
  • Relocating streetlight poles onto new wall for footpath accessibility

The works on Frandi Street included:

  • Strengthening the existing retaining wall to improve seismic stability
  • Wall Plastering and applying anti-graffiti paint to all exposed surfaces
  • Painting new road makings
