Night time closures of Seatoun tunnel for lighting upgrade

30 October 2019

The Seatoun tunnel will be closed Sunday to Thursday nights for the next six weeks from 10 November 2019, to allow contractors to install new state-of-the-art LED interior lighting and emergency lighting.

Traffic will be detoured between 11pm and 5.30am via Tio Tio Road. Trucks and heavy vehicles should use Ira Street, Para Street and Awa Roads.

Please note there will be no work on Friday and Saturday nights, so the tunnel will be open as per usual.

Pedestrians and cyclists wanting to travel through the tunnel while crews are working will be escorted through by one of the crew on site.

Buses will still be able to travel through the tunnel after 11pm as they are unable to use either detour route, says Faiz Tawfeek, Team Leader Structures for Wellington City Council.

“We have worked closely with Metlink to ensure that the last buses running through the tunnel can still operate.

“The bus will stop at the tunnel entrance and be escorted past the work site. To allow the bus enough room to pass, crews will have to move their specialist lift equipment over to one side from the centre of the tunnel. It’s quite a big logistical exercise, but we have adapted our work to factor in when the bus is due, this way we can minimise the time the bus has to wait while we move our equipment.”

The lighting work is part of a larger project to upgrade and earthquake-strengthen the tunnel, part of an ongoing programme to improve the safety and accessibility of Wellington’s earthquake prone structures.

Daytime earthquake strengthening work continues between 9am and 4pm each week day, with traffic controlled by the traffic signals at either end of the tunnel.

We apologise for any inconvenience this project may cause.
