Wellington hosts Te Matatini, the national kapa haka festival, from 21-24 February, meaning this month is a perfect time to celebrate our unique culture and give it a go, Wellington Mayor Justin Lester says.
“We want everyone in Wellington to welcome the 46 kapa haka teams and their supporters and to take the opportunity to learn some simple te reo Māori.
“When you say kia ora, mōrena, or haere mai you are showing pride in our distinctive New Zealand culture and heritage.
“As the capital city we are committed to promoting te reo in our journey towards becoming bilingual by 2040.”
The Kia Kaha te reo Māori campaign is a partnership with Te Taura Whiri and supports the Council’s Te Tauihu policy, which recognise the status of te reo Māori as an official language of New Zealand and aims to increase its use and visibility in the capital city. It is also supported by the Wellington Regional Economic Development Agency.
The City Council and WREDA have encouraged businesses in the central city to join the campaign.
Participating hotels, cafes and retailers will have a “Kia kaha te reo Māori” sticker in shop window or at payment counters and phrase cards available to assist staff and patrons to learn simple te reo Māori words. The phrase card will be available to download and print at tetaurawhiri.govt.nz
All Council pools and libraries, along with the Cable Car Museum, Space Place
Wellington Museum and Nairn St Cottage will be participating in the campaign.
Bright and colourful “Piki mai ki Pōneke” street flags to welcome Te Matatini visitors to Wellington and posters promoting the campaign will also be installed around the city from 4 February.
Te Taura Whiri chief executive Ngahiwi Apanui says the language commission is proud to be partnering with Wellington City Council to promote te reo Māori.
“You don’t have to be Māori to be speak te reo. We encourage everyone to give te reo a go: ahakoa iti, akona, kōrerotia – learn a little, use a little.
“Our Māori culture and heritage is what makes New Zealand stand apart from other English speaking countries.”

Ka tū Te Matatini ki Poneke ā te 21 - 24 o tēnei marama, nā reira he wā tika tēnei ki te whakanui i tō tātou ahurea ake mā te whakamahi i te reo Māori, te kī a te Koromatua o Pōneke, a Justin Lester.

He kaupapa mahi-tahi a Kia Kaha te reo Māori nā Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori me te Kaunihera o Pōneke e tautoko ana i te kaupapa here a te Kaunihera arā Te Tauihu. He whakaaetanga tēnei i te mana o te reo Māori hei reo ōkawa o Aotearoa, ā, ko tōna whāinga e nui ake ai te kitenga me te whakamahinga o te reo Māori i te tāone matua o Aotearoa.
