Council grants boost state of the arts in the Capital
24 November 2015
The Council has approved funding of 30 creative projects through the Arts and Culture Fund today – giving over $96,000 to assist a wide range of artistic groups around the capital.

The full list of projects includes:
- $4,000 towards a mural at the Brooklyn Community Centre in consultation with the community centre users and local residents, and led by artist Ellen Coup.
- $6,000 towards the 2016 Performance Arcade – a series of installations and performances based in and around shipping containers on the waterfront.
- $4,000 towards the New Zealand Book Council’s Writers in Schools programme that takes children’s writers and illustrators into schools and libraries to encourage and support the reading and writing development of children and teenagers.
Councillor Ray Ahipene-Mercer, leader of the Arts and Culture Portfolio, says these grants will add to the vibrancy of the capital, and maintain sustainability for the successful applicants.
“All these projects will contribute significantly to the artistic fabric that makes Wellington such a creative hub. With funding issues affecting the arts sector, it’s also important that the Council can offer support and make these projects come to life.”
The Arts and Culture Fund supports community organisations for projects that meet the criteria for the fund. The priority areas for the fund are:
- to support the city as a hothouse for talent
- to reinforce Wellington as a region of confident identities
- to support active and engaged people
- to encourage our creative future through technology.
The closing date for the next Arts and Culture Fund is 22 March 2016. For funding advice or to apply visit our website, phone 04 803 8562 or email.
