Get ready for Robbie – things to consider

29 October 2015

Thousands of Robbie Williams fans will be descending on the Basin Reserve this Saturday (30 October), so unless you’re one of them the advice is to avoid the area.

Wellington City Council’s Events Operations Manager, Simon Perry, says fans should consider walking to the show.

“Gates open at 5.30pm but people should allow themselves extra time to get to there, especially since the public entrance is at the southern end of the reserve. People should keep this in mind if they’re walking from town as the Buckle Street entrance is for disabled and VIP access only.”

Perry says cars should avoid the Basin area and Mt Victoria tunnel all day. At 6pm, the road surrounding the Basin Reserve will be down to one lane until 11pm.

“We have also advised sports clubs to try to have games played in local areas to avoid traffic moving across the city. This will hopefully reduce traffic flows but if you don’t have to travel through the area then avoid it and, if you do, you should expect delays.

“To reduce the pressure on this area, people should use the quays, Oriental Bay and Evans Bay roads to move to and from the eastern suburbs and the airport. Also use Taranaki Street to access the urban motorway, southern suburbs, and Wellington Hospital.

If you do end up driving around the Basin, be aware there will be crowds of pedestrians coming and going from the concert. Please slow down, be patient and drive with extra care. If you are leaving the concert on foot, be aware the Basin Reserve is surrounded by a busy highway. Don’t ruin your evening with Robbie by stepping out in front of moving traffic.

“It’s been walking weather lately and we know that Saturday will be fine but people coming to the concert may want to bring that extra layer of clothing for later in the night when it will get cooler,” says Perry.

“If you have to use transport then make it public since there are so many bus stops around the area.”
