Wadestown Road traffic detours

21 July 2015

A daytime detour for general traffic and buses is in place in Wadestown from 5 August to mid-September while Wellington Water renews a wastewater main beneath Wadestown Road.

The work means the section of Wadestown Road between Weld Street and the Margaret Street walkway is closed to vehicles Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm.

Residents living in the closed area are able to get in and out, and pedestrians and cyclists can still use the route,  but a detour is in place for everyone else (see the map and links below for more information).

The detour and alternative bus route (from the city end) is via Cecil Road, Margaret Street, Mairangi Road, and Norwich Street, then left down Wilton Road (and then right into Churchill Drive for private vehicles).

Route 14 buses and affected school bus services are being diverted when the road is closed and free shuttle buses are operating. Note, following customer feedback, changes to the shuttle bus timetable and route will be in place from Monday 17 August.

Wellington Water Community Engagement Manager Alex van Paassen says the renewal work is important, as leaking wastewater pipes can have significant environmental impacts.

He says they had hoped to keep the road open, but all the buried services, including power, phone and gas lines, meant the safest option was to close the road.

“We understand this is not terribly convenient for people but we have to do the right thing for the safety of our workers and road users,” he says. " We certainly appreciate people’s patience when it comes to these disruptions.”
