Two suburban libraries closing for maintenance

4 May 2015

Karori and Newtown libraries are in need of attention, so will be temporarily closing soon for maintenance.

Karori Library is 10 years old, and needs internal repainting and other work done. It will close on 9 May and reopen on 26 May. We are offering a longer than usual loan period to cover this time, so stock up beforehand. You can also:

  • visit any of the other public libraries in Wellington
  • use our online library services 24/7 at wcl.govt.nz
  • return your books to any of our other libraries 9–26 May (the usual return fee will be waived)
  • read the newspaper and access free wi-fi and internet at Karori Community Centre
  • talk to a librarian and pick up your reserves from Karori Recreation Centre
  • come along to our extra pre-school storytime sessions at Cummings Park Library in Ngaio (Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 10.30am)
  • enjoy the Baby Rock ‘n’ Rhyme session at Cummings Park Library, Ngaio at 10.30am on Tuesdays.
  • drop in to the cafe, which will still be open.

Newtown Library is about 25 years old, and is due to get new skylights, heating and ventilation systems, and more efficient lighting. It will also be repainted and have its vinyl replaced.

So that all this work can be done, the library will close on 13 May and reopen on 23 July. A longer than usual loan period will cover this time, so stock up beforehand. You can also:

  • use our free shuttle between Newtown and Ruth Gotlieb libraries, where there will be extra seating and newspapers
  • visit any of the other public libraries in Wellington
  • use our online library services 24/7 at wcl.govt.nz
  • pick up your reserves from Smart Newtown
  • return your books to any of our other libraries 13 May–23 July (the usual return fee will be waived).
