More Council funding for community initiatives

23 April 2015

Wellington City Council’s Community Sport and Recreation Committee has approved funding, from its Social and Recreation Fund, for 28 community groups.

The Committee approved $128,318 for initiatives ranging from working with inner city retailers to an innovative youth safety project where ‘youth hosts’ (guided by Zeal Education Trust) will work in the central city. Other projects include holiday programmes for children with autism, a new community garden in Tawa, and a youth sports programme for people with disabilities.

Committee Chair Paul Eagle says “these organisations are a vital part of delivering social services in Wellington as they focus on those who most need it”.

Funding from three funding pools was approved. The CH Izard Bequest is available for projects for educational purposes or to support needy, disadvantaged groups in the city. The Council’s recommendations to support seven organisations with a total of $18,600 will be sent to the bequest’s trustees.

The Committee also approved three-year funding contracts for 20 organisations with a track record of delivery such as Citizens Advice Bureau, Community Law, the Wellington Free Ambulance and the Life Flight Trust.

Applications for the next funding round close on 14 July 2015 and applicants will be notified of the outcome of their applications from 12 August 2015.
