History revisited on Wellingtons Mokopuna Island
9 March 2015
Passengers departing Wellington’s Queens Wharf and Petone Wharf on the East by West Ferry to Matiu/Somes Island and Days Bay will become part of a new artwork by Wellington artist Mike Ting.
Four scheduled sailings – three of them free – will ferry passengers past Matiu/Somes and the less-known Mokopuna Island, site of the final months and tragic death of a sick man placed there by local authorities in 1904.
Half a mile out a warning horn will sound, announcing the start of the ten minute performance event at the heart of this project. Ting explores themes of isolation, vulnerability and social responsibility in New Zealand’s post-1980s socio-political context.
Mokupuna sailings will take place on the normal Harbour Explorer schedule, departing Queens Wharf 14 March, 10.30am, 12.30pm and 2.30pm. These sailings are free but pre-booking with East by West is advised to avoid disappointment.
The 12pm sailing from Queens Wharf will also sail past Mokopuna Island but normal fares apply.
Pre-booked passengers need to check in half an hour before sailing. In the event of weather cancellation or postponement details will be available on (04) 494 3339.
Contact East by West Ferries for sailing times and bookings.
