HMNZS Te Kaha sails to commemorate WW100

16 October 2014

On 16 October 1914, New Zealand troops sailed from Wellington Harbour on a voyage first to Albany in West Australia, then on to one of the most significant campaigns in New Zealand’s military history.

To mark 100 years since our troops left for Gallipoli, HMNZS Te Kaha will visit Wellington and Albany to be a part of commemorative events. The ship will also represent New Zealand at next year’s centenary events at Gallipoli.

As well as being open for visitors, Te Kaha will conduct a ceremonial sailing from Queens Wharf at 1pm on 16 October. The event is proudly supported by the New Zealand Defence Force, Wellington City Council and the Ministry of Culture and Heritage.

Te Kaha was also open to visitors earlier this week.
