Drinking water? Run the tap first
2 October 2014
Do you start your day by glugging back a big glass of water? If so, it’s a good idea to run the tap for a bit first, as some plumbing fittings allow tiny traces of metals such as lead and copper to build up in water that’s been sitting in the tap overnight.
Although the health risk is small, the Ministry of Health recommends that you flush a mugful from your tap each morning – just to be on the safe side. All households should take this precaution, whether you’re on private or public water supply. Landlords are also asked to make their tenants aware of this advice.
