Pacific Advisory Group By-Election Nominations Open

19 September 2014

Pacific people can make a difference in their community by nominating candidates from Tuvalu, Melanesia, and Micronesia from Monday 22 September to stand for October’s by-elections to the Wellington City Council Pacific Advisory Group.

Make a difference in your Pacific community

The Council’s Pacific Advisory Group was established in 2003 and is made up of representatives from Pacific nation groups, and provides the link between their community and the Council.

This group helps Pacific people understand and take part in the Council’s decision-making processes, advises the Council on challenges and issues facing Pacific people, and gives advice on policy, planning and activities for their community.

Councillor Sarah Free says this is a great opportunity for these communities to have a voice in the Council: “Nominees should have some experience of governance, policy and planning, have a good network and communications skills, as well as a commitment to making a difference for Pacific people in the Capital.”

The by-elections are being held as representatives from Melanesia and Micronesia have recently been introduced to the group, and there were no candidates nominated for Tuvalu in the main election in April, or the by-election in May, both held earlier this year. There are two seats for Tuvalu, and one each for Melanesia and Micronesia.

Nominations are open from Monday 22 September and close at noon on Wednesday 8 October, with the by-elections being held on Wednesday 15 October, 2014.

To be eligible to stand for election, candidates must be nominated to represent the Pacific Island of their descent, and people who want to nominate candidates must be of the same Pacific Island descent as the candidate they nominate. Candidates and nominators must also be enrolled to vote in Wellington City Council elections.

Nomination forms can be downloaded or picked up from our Wakefield Street offices from Monday 22 September to the morning of Wednesday 8 October. The by-elections take place on Wednesday 15 October under the supervision of the Council Electoral Officer.
