Wellington Mourns Mandela
6 December 2013
Mayor Celia Wade-Brown has today expressed her sorrow at the death of Nelson Mandela.
The Mayor has spoken with The South African High Commissioner Zodwa Lallie and offered condolences to her and the staff of the High Commission.
"Nelson Mandela is a shining light in the global peace community for leading the end of apartheid in South Africa," said the Mayor.
"His sacrifice of 27 years in prison and his willingness to lead reconciliation with his imprisoners remains truly inspirational."
Wellington City Council will support the South African High Commission for preparations to honour the global leader in the Capital.
As a mark of respect, the South African flag will be flown at half mast from the Wellington Town Hall.
