Spring is Sprung, the Grass is Riz
5 December 2013
A perfect combination of warm temperatures and rain has combined to produce the best spring grass growth in Wellington for years.
Grass is growing so fast that Wellington City Council’s mowing team is struggling to keep up with growth across the city.
The full-on growth means the team is taking longer to complete its scheduled runs than during most November and December periods.
The Council’s Mowing Team Manager, David Grace, says complaints have been coming in thick and fast – indeed, the Council’s call centre has received more than 100 calls since 1 November.
“Please bear with us - the teams are utilising all available resources to bring this under control as quickly as possible,” says David.
The grass on sportsfields is growing rapidly, as is the growth on roadsides.
Julian Emeny, the Council’s Sportsfields Manager, says the mowing team is working long hours to keep the grass down – especially on cricket outfields.
“We hope sports clubs understand the situation and ask that players be patient.”
