We’ve got something a little different planned this Christmas – and you could be a winner.

Angelina Ballerina will feature in the Santa Parade

The city’s festive season starts this Sunday 8 December with Capital Christmas, a fantastic day of fun and cheer for the whole family.

The much-awaited Santa Parade gets under way at 2pm and features an amazing array of floats and children’s characters, including Angelina Ballerina and Bob the Builder.

Eternal favourites Peter Pan and the Smurfs will strut their stuff to a soundtrack of rousing bagpipes, booming brass bands and Christmas carols.

The parade starts at the corner of Lambton Quay and Ballance Street, travelling along Lambton Quay to Willis Street, then Mercer Street and Wakefield Street to end at Manners Street. Be sure to arrive early - and use public transport or walk if possible.

At 3.30pm, Santa will host a party for the kids in Frank Kitts Park. There’ll be delicious food, carol singing for the wee ones and loads of entertainment to get you in the Christmas spirit.

In the evening it’s time for Wellington’s favourite sing-along. Beginning at 7pm, Carols by Candlelight returns to Frank Kitts Park. Look out for local celebs and a special appearance from the man in red.

For travel information, go to the Metlink website or phone 0800 801 700. For cancellations, listen to NewstalkZB at 9am on Sunday, check our website or phone 499 4444.

Over the next four weeks we’ll keep the party and festive spirit going with Christmas Presents - free entertainment around the city and the chance to win a Christmas gift from the Council. Look out for special outdoor performances in the central city every Thursday, Friday and Saturday this month. There’ll be festive music and contemporary dance.

If you get along to a Christmas Presents performance or ‘like’ the event post on Facebook, you can go in the draw to win a Christmas present from the Council, ranging from native plants to Hurricanes tickets, ebook readers to water tanks. You could even find a year’s supply of Council rubbish bags under your tree.
