Wellington City Council’s City Events Coordinator, Rebecca Martin, says the 12–minute show will start at 9pm on the dot.
"Being a Saturday, we’re encouraging people to get into town early and make an evening of it. We are still expecting traffic to be heavy so people need to keep this in mind and consider walking into town if they live nearby, or use public transport."
There will be extensive traffic management measures in place – particularly on Oriental Parade and Mount Victoria.
Oriental Parade and Evans Bay Parade will be closed to city-bound traffic from 7pm–10pm so emergency vehicles can access the area quickly if needed.
Evans Bay Parade will be closed to through traffic (residents’ access only) at the Cobham Drive intersection from 7pm–10pm.
"People need to know there’ll be large numbers of parking wardens on patrol and any illegally or dangerously parked vehicles will be towed," says Mrs Martin.
To control traffic on Mount Victoria, Alexandra Road will be closed at the intersection with Constable Street in Newtown once the maximum safe parking capacity is reached. There will also be parking restrictions around the lookout along Alexandra Road and a one-way traffic flow will be in place on the roads around the lookout.
"If you can, please catch the bus, train or walk into town. Traffic may well come to a complete standstill. Also for safety reasons, Police will be proactively enforcing no stopping anywhere on the motorway between Petone and Wellington."
It's not only illegal to pull over on the state highway to watch fireworks - you're also putting yourself, your passengers, and other road users in danger.
"The New Zealand Transport Authority will be monitoring the highways on Saturday evening to ensure they are operating safely and efficiently during the busy evening."
