It’s the 12th anniversary of the much-loved Indian celebration. This year’s festival highlights are masked dancers from Jharkhand state in east India and artist Hanif Kureshi’s contemporary art pieces incorporating traditional hand-painted fonts.

There will also be classes in speaking Hindi, musical sessions and cooking classes. Other highlights are Bollywood workouts and a competition, 18 vegetarian food stalls and stalls selling clothes, jewellery and other Indian products.

The day’s festival will finish with a fireworks display on the waterfront outside TSB Arena, countdown from 9.50pm.

Diwali, also known as Deepavali (literally ‘a row of lamps’), marks the beginning of the Hindu New Year according to the lunar calendar. It celebrates, by lighting lights, the victory of good over evil.

Organised by Wellington City Council and Asia New Zealand Foundation, Diwali is a great excuse to add a bit of light to your life and welcome in spring.
