Two children in Keith Spry Pool.
Matt Kilgour, manager of the pool, says the pool will remain open for as long as possible during the upgrade.
“It’s great that we’ve been able to keep the facility open while all this is going on, and we’re now taking bookings for term 3. The work is on track for completion at the end of 2014.”
The existing pool building, dating from the early 1980s, will be expanded by about 50 percent in terms of floor area. It will feature:
- a new learn-to-swim pool
- a play pool for children and infants
- new changing rooms
- a new steel roof.
A striking glass and steel building extension, designed by Architecture HDT, will house both new pools.
The project started in June 2013 and so far the old wet lounge has been demolished, the site has been levelled and four metres of soil has been excavated to house the plant room. The next step will be the construction of concrete walls and floor of the plant room, followed by excavation for the new pools.
