Dr Kate McGrath, Inspire Wellington Award winner, is a chemistry professor at Victoria University and is Director of the MacDiarmid Institute. She has studied business as well as science, and recently instigated the Master of Advanced Technology Enterprise degree.

Kate’s research projects include trying to create a bone-like synthetic material for human and animal implants. This material will be much more like real bones than the heavier metal and ceramic implants currently used.

The Inspire Wellington Ambassador Award went to business partners Natasha Lampard and Mike Brown, the brains behind the city’s incredibly successful annual Webstock conference.

The laid-back music festival-inspired conference attracts over 850 people from around the world, and over 20 international guest speakers. These are the ‘rock stars’ of the web industry, from companies like Facebook, Twitter, Google and Microsoft, and they invariably rate Webstock as the best conference they attend.

Both awards are sponsored by the Council. The Gold Awards have been held every year since 1999 to recognise enterprise and excellence in Wellington business.
