Chartwell Walkway Track Closing on Weekdays

25 June 2013

A track that runs up the hill from Chartwell to the Skyline Walkway will be closed on weekdays for several months while Meridian Energy installs an underground power line linking the new Mill Creek Wind Farm to the Wilton substation.

The work will start at Wilton substation on Monday 8 July and move up the well-used track from the substation to the ridge before crossing the Skyline Walkway for about 300 metres.

The work will involve the progressive digging of a 1.1-metre deep trench to house the power cable.

Safety measures will include:

  • installing barriers at the entrance to the track at Wilton Substation and just below the Skyline Walkway
  • fencing off the trench at night
  • orange flashing lights and signs at the barriers and track entrances.

The barriers will be removed during the weekends and the trench will either be filled or fenced to ensure it’s safe. All other tracks leading to the Skyline Walkway - which runs from Johnsonville to Makara Hill Road in Karori - will be open as usual.

Mill Creek Wind Farm is scheduled to be complete at the end of 2014 and will generate enough renewable energy to power the equivalent of 30,000 average New Zealand homes.
