2 April 2013

With 58 applicants and only nine vacancies, the selection of new Youth Council members was always going to be a challenge.

The call for new members went out late last year and applications came flooding in - mostly from schools but also from students at tertiary or training institutions. The new members range in age from 12 to 19. They’ve joined because they want to make a difference. Daisy Lutyens, 16, wants to contribute to how the city is run; Erin Lockhart, 14, would like to lobby for more support for refugees in Wellington.

Simon Wright, the Council’s Senior Advisor with responsibility for the Youth Council, says for those applying, it’s an intensive process: setting out in writing why they’d like to join, what they can contribute and what they’d like to achieve - and then an interview.

“In the end, it was very hard to choose as everyone who applied had great talents to bring to the Council.”

With fresh faces around the table, the Youth Council is now getting down to the year’s business. They work on youth-related projects and advise the Council on issues that affect young people in the city - issues that will affect them now and into their future. So it’s important they make their voices heard.
