At this stage, some of the projects we plan to include in our draft Long Term Plan for consultation are:

  • strengthening Council buildings ($47.8 million)
  • strengthening tunnels and roads ($12.7 million)
  • strengthening the water network and building a new reservoir to supply water to the hospital and inner city in an emergency ($15.5 million)
  • funding Te Papa at $1 million per year
  • funding to support building owners to complete earthquake strengthening work - for example, by working with other organisations to develop new technologies, funding further safety assessment of buildings and developing new options to finance building works ($1.5 million)
  • a new library at Johnsonville ($18.5 million)
  • supporting the creation of a Regional Amenities Fund with other local councils,which could be used to support arts, culture and environmental attractions and events in the Wellington region ($14.4 million)
  • road safety initiatives at black spot crash locations ($8.6 million)
  • cycleways (The Great Harbour Cycleway and South Coast to City ($7.8 million)
  • The Hobbit premiere ($1.1 million)
  • FIFA Under 20 Men's World Cup in 2015 ($2.5 million)
  • central city projects, including a new inner-city park for a growing inner city population ($10.5 million)
  • upgrades to community centres in Aro Valley, Kilbirnie, Newtown and to Strathmore community base ($6.3 million).
