New Give-way Rules From Sunday

20 March 2012

At 5.00am this Sunday (25 March), two of the give-way rules are changing and they'll affect all drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.

We've already made changes at a number of intersections around the city and will be keeping an eye on the traffic over the next few weeks.

We're making sure our staff are familiar with the new rules ahead of time but they can also get some off-road practice in Civic Square next week.

You are welcome to join in - from 12.30pm - 1.30pm every weekday next week, weather permitting - there is no actual driving involved. Thanks to the New Zealand Police.

Learn the new rules by phoning the New Zealand Transport Agency on 0800 656 055 or visit:

Top of the 'T' goes before me:

At an uncontrolled T-intersection or driveway, all traffic from a terminating road (bottom of the T) will have to give way to all traffic on a continuing road (top of the T). This includes public driveways such as a supermarket or hospital.

Remember: top of the 'T' goes before me.

If you're turning right, give way:

This rule will apply at intersections where two vehicles are facing no signs or signals, or the same signs or signals.

You'll need to give way to left-turning vehicles coming from the opposite direction if you are turning right.

Remember: if you're turning right, give way.
